Malagash Loop

This exciting day-trip combines the beauty of the coastline with a touch of Scottish heritage and a taste of modern Nova Scotia Wines.

Take Highway 104 to Exit 22 and the short drive to Pictou.  Follow the signs to the Hector Heritage Quay where you will learn about the 18th century Scottish migration and tour the replica of the immigrant ship, "The Hector" at dockside.  You can take a walk along the shoreline and have lunch in one of Pictou's many café's.  Before leaving take a few minutes to drive around the town and enjoy the historic architecture of this lovely town.

From Pictou follow the signs for route 6 which takes you along the scenic Sunrise Trail to Tatamagouche.

Keeping on route 6, watch for the signs to Malagash and Jost Vineyards where you can tour the winery and enjoy a taste-test of our local award-winning wines.  Nearby, the Malagash Area Heritage Museum chronicles the history of the local salt-mines and this small museum is definitely a "must see."

Returning to route 6 retrace your steps to Tatamagouche and follow route 311 onto route 256 (10 km) to visit the Balmoral Grist Mill , an 1874 fully restored water-powered grist mill.  It is said the only authentic Scottish Oatcakes are made from the oatmeal ground here the old-fashioned way.

From here follow route 256 towards Pictou where you then return to Antigonish.
